PhD Scholarship: Aboriginal Visual Histories – Photographing Indigenous Australians
The Centre for Australian Indigenous Studies, Monash University is pleased to offer a PhD Scholarship as part of the Aboriginal Visual Histories project. The scholarship will be offered for commencement from January – March 2009.
Eligibility: Applicants must hold an Australian or New Zealand Bachelors or Masters by Research degree with first or second class honours, or qualifications and/or research experience deemed equivalent by the university.
Applicants should have a background in Indigenous studies, history, visual studies, anthropology or other relevant area. Experience in working with Indigenous communities is preferred.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply.
Project: This ARC-funded four-year project will review photographs of
Aboriginal people in key collections around Australia and in Europe,
produce a systematic and comprehensive history of photographing
Aboriginal people up to the present day and in a global context, and
collaborate with descendants to incorporate Indigenous perspectives. A scholarship is offered for a PhD research project focusing on
collaboration with descendants, including fieldwork with selected
communities, and scholarly analysis of the process, value and protocols associated with returning photographs to descendant communities.
Scholarship duration: 3 years full-time.
Amount: Award holders will receive a stipend equal to the Australian
Postgraduate Award annual stipend of $20,007 (2008 rate) and may also be eligible for allowances for relocation and thesis production.
