TENTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON DIVERSITY IN ORGANISATIONS, COMMUNITIES AND NATIONS

The Diversity Conference has a history of bringing together scholarly, government and practice-based participants with an interest in the issues of diversity and community. The Conference examines the concept of diversity as a positive aspect of a global world and globalised society. Diversity is in many ways reflective of our present world order, but there are ways of taking this further without necessary engendering its alternatives: racism, conflict, discrimination and inequity. Diversity as a mode of social existence can be projected in ways that deepen the range of human experience. The Conference will seek to explore the full range of what diversity means and explore modes of diversity in real-life situations of living together in community. The Conference supports a move away from simple affirmations that 'diversity is good' to a much more nuanced account of the effects and uses of diversity on differently situated communities in the context of our current epoch of globalisation.
The tenth anniversary of the Diversity Conference will be marked in Belfast, a city both with a past marked by sectarian conflict and a rich heritage of diversity. In addition, ethnic minority communities have increased in number and size since the expansion of the European Union. Belfast, like many cities, continues to work to overcome old divisions.
As well as impressive line-up of international plenary speakers, the Conference will also include numerous paper, workshop and colloquium presentations by practitioners, teachers and researchers. We would particularly like to invite you to respond to the Conference Call-for-Papers. Presenters may choose to submit written papers for publication in The International Journal of Diversity in Organisations, Communities and Nations. If you are unable to attend the Conference in person, virtual registrations are also available which allow you to submit a paper for refereeing and possible publication.

The deadline for the next round in the call for papers (a title and short abstract) is 8 October 2009. Future deadlines will be announced on the Conference website after this date. Proposals are reviewed within two weeks of submission. Villa Reale, Monza (Italy), Unesco - The 1st UNESCO Forum on Cultural Industries will be held in Monza (Italy) from 24 to 26 September 2009. The new millennium has witnessed the rise in the importance of the cultural and creative industries. New economic development strategies based on creativity as a source of competitive advantage are taking shape. This context opens new perspectives and raises questions about the many possibilities for this booming sector.The purpose of the Forum is to demonstrate the potential and the dynamism of the culture sector that is measured not only in terms of its percentage of GDP, but also through its influence and ability to transform societies. Culture is a source of creativity and innovation that feeds the cultural industries, including crafts. It is not a sector of secondary importance; rather it constitutes a key component of the economy and is a source of employment, income, human and social development and international exposure. Cultural industries, notably in the areas of design and fashion, embody a continuum between traditional inspiration, the fruit of identity, and modernity. They would benefit from being more deeply rooted in traditional know-how. Cultural industries must be able to give life to and be nourished by know-how through adapting to a changing world. In so doing, they can embody a constant dynamic of renewal. By bringing together people from many different horizons, each bringing complementary experiences, this first edition of UNESCO Forum on Cultural Industries seeks to lay the foundation of a much-awaited encounter that may inspire ideas, projects and trends nourishing the evolution of the cultural industries.This Forum will also facilitate the creation of synergies and the expansion of new forms of cooperation for development in cultural diversity. Italy, and specifically the Lombardy region - renowned for its cultural industries - and the city of Monza, have agreed to support the funding and the organization of the First Edition of the UNESCO Annual Forum on Culture and Cultural Industries. |

KEBLE COLLEGE, OXFORD UNIVERSITY How does the study of material things contribute to our understanding of the early modern, modern and contemporary world? What is the distinctive contribution of archaeology in these studies? The 7th annual meeting of the CHAT conference group for contemporary and historical archaeology focuses on the archaeological study of Modern Materials from 'small things forgotten' to large and complex technological artefacts; and from discrete, single objects to large, disparate assemblages. Busan the second largest South Korean city and, as one of the busiest world's ports, is significantly involved in globalizing processes. Busan's growing financial services sector promises to increase its involvement in globalization, as does its commitment to international sport. In 2002, Busan was a host city for both the Asian Games and the FIFA World Cup. In addition, it has submitted a bid to be the host of the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.
